How To Play - NBA Stock Exchange

The NBA Stock Exchange 101: Introduction to the Game

Overview

The NBA Stock Exchange (NBASE) is a fantasy basketball game where users become the general manager of their own team of professional Basketball players. The object of the game is to score as many fantasy points as possible by assembling a team of NBA players.

The better the players on your team perform in real-life regular season games, the more points they will score for your fantasy Basketball team. To win the game, you need to score the most points over the course of the season. If you score the most points in a single month, you may win other prizes.

What makes the NBA Stock Exchange different from other fantasy games is the use of a global trading floor, much like a stock market, where player prices move based on supply and demand. Managers start out with a budget of 180 NBASE dollars to use in assembling their team. A team can be assembled in the NBA Stock Exchange's trading floor. The trading floor opens on October 1st, 2009th and managers can freely trade players in an effort to field the best team each week. The NBA season starts on October 27th.

Teams

Every person is allowed to have one and only one team which he or she will manage throughout the season. The team will automatically be included in the Global standings and be eligible to win prizes. (See our contest rules for eligibility requirements and additional terms and conditions.)

Users can also enter their team into a number of optional private and public leagues. (See optional leagues section below.)

Scoring

The NBA Stock Exchange uses a points-based scoring system with the following points awarded for each statistical category:

Statistical Category Fantasy Points
Field Goals Missed (FGMI) -0.46
Field Goals Made (FGMA) 0.54
Free Throw Missed (FTMI) -0.75
Free Throw Made (FTMA) 0.25
Points Scored (PT) 0.50
3-point Shots Made (3PT) 1.00
Total Rebounds (REB) 1.50
Assists (AST) 1.99
Steals (ST) 3.00
Turnovers (TO) -2.00
Blocked Shots (BLK) 3.00

Tiebreaker categories are listed below in descending order of importance:

1. Team's total Points Score

2. Team's total Rebounds

3. Team's total Assists

4. Team's total Steals

5. Team's total blocks

6. Team's total 3-Pointers

In an extremely unlikely event that the tied teams are still tied after these 6 categories are considered, then these teams shall remain tied, and will split whatever winnings they have equally.

Initial Game Setup

Team Positions

Each team has the following nine starting positions:

Point Guard (PG)

Shooting Guard (SG)

Guard (G)

Power Forward (PF)

Small Forward (SF)

Forward (F)

Forward/Center (FC)

Center (C)

Utility (UTIL)

In addition, each team has three bench spots. Bench positions can be used to provide back-ups in case a starter is injured or to hold starters facing a tough match-up or a bye-week, but are too valuable to sell. Managers are not required to field a full nine player starting team if they think they can earn more points playing with a "light" team.

Starting Budget

Each manager is given an initial budget of 180 NBASE dollars to purchase players for their team. If a manager spends all 180 NBASE dollars during the draft, they will not received additional NBASE dollars to buy blyers on the Trading Floor. This game money is only used within the NBA Stock Exchange Basketball game and has no value outside of the game.

To ensure that nobody gets completely knocked out of the game with a few unlucky roster moves, there will be a minimum team value of 150 NBASE dollars. If your team falls below 150, your balance will be increased overnight to meet the minimum.

Team Management

In order to get credit for a player's on field performance, managers have to place the player in a starting position at least 5 minutes before his NBA team is scheduled to tip-off. After this point, the player cannot be moved between a starting position and a bench position, and starting players cannot be sold until the opening of trading the following morning.

The Team History link shows the game statistics of every player who has started on your team and the number of points each player has earned for you. This page also details buy and sell prices as well as the price gains and losses of all the players you have owned.

Position Usage

Each starting position on a team roster can be used a maximum of 82 games for the season. After the maximum number of games for a position has been reached, a team cannot earn any more points at that position for the rest of the week or season.

Trading Players

The NBA Stock Exchange uses an open market for managers to buy and sell players. During the Pre-season, a player's value is primarily based on his projected performance, but once the market opens October 21st a player's price will be determined by the buying and selling pressures of the market.

As more managers buy a player, his price goes up. If more managers are selling a player, his price goes down. Since player prices will go up and down, the value of your team may also go up and down as the season progresses. Just remember, a player's monetary value doesn't count toward a team's score, and that shrewd roster management is the key to success.

As an additional note, once you buy a player, if you start them in a game you will not be able to sell them until 2 days after the start.

Market Hours: The Trading Floor is open 7 days a week from 8 AM to 3 AM Eastern Time. Trading may be halted temporarily for 3-5 minutes at the top of each hour to allow the NBASE to make market adjustments.

Transaction Fees: After a manager's first 12 purchases, an NBASE dollar transaction fee is charged each time you buy or sell a player according to the following schedule:

Team Value Transaction Fee
<= 195 NBASE Dollars 0.10 NBASE Dollars
195.01 to 210.00 NBASE Dollars 0.25 NBASE Dollars
210.01 to 240.00 NBASE Dollars 0.75 NBASE Dollars
240.01 to 270.00 NBASE Dollars 1.00 NBASE Dollars
270.01 to 300.00 NBASE Dollars 1.75 NBASE Dollars
>=300.01 NBASE Dollars 3.00 NBASE Dollars

Again, NBASE dollars are game money and no real money is charged. This fee will be displayed when you confirm your order. This fee schedule is subject to change.

Player Waiver Periods: If a manager buys a player and starts him the same day, the manager must wait one day before selling the player. If the manager never starts the player, the manager can sell the player at anytime. The Waiver Period begins on the date of purchase.

For example, a manager buys Brandon Roy on Monday afternoon then starts him that night. Once Roy locks into the starting position 5 minutes before the game, the manager will not be able to sell him until the market opens on Wednesday. If Roy never locks into a game or does not earn any points, the manager can sell him at any time. Also, if the managers keeps Roy after the initial 2 day Waiver Period, the manager can sell Roy at any time after waiver period.

Watch List Tool: This tool allows managers to track players they are considering buying for their team. It also shows game statistics and pricing information for players a manager has chosen to track.

Optional Leagues

Once managers create their team, they can join additional leagues by clicking the My Leagues tab. Here managers can enroll their team in up to ten leagues. Everyone is automatically enrolled in the Global rankings. To join a private league, managers need to have a league ID# and password issued by the league commissioner.

To join a private league, managers need to have a league ID# and password issued by the league commissioner.

Remember with the NBA Stock Exchange, to make it easy, you participate in all of these leagues with only one team to manage. Only one team is allowed per person.

League Commissioners: From the My Leagues page, managers who want to be the commissioner of their own league can create a private league. From this page, managers can click the "Create League" button, name the new league, and give it a password. They can also specify the starting and ending dates for the league if they don't want to use the defaults. The commissioner also has the ability to remove players from private leagues and edit the Commissioner's note on the league home page. The League ID for the Commissioner's new league can be found on the upper left of the league page that is created.
